Variation Watch

Know when a variation sells out.

Etsy tells you when a listing runs out of stock. It does not tell you when one size, one color, or one option within that listing hits zero. Your listing stays live, looking complete, while customers land on a sold-out variation you don't know about. This extension watches for that transition and sends you one email when it happens.

Why this one

Minimum access by design.

Variation Watch connects to your Etsy shop through OAuth with a single read-only scope: listings_r. It reads your active listing inventory to detect sold-out variations. It never accesses your orders, buyers, buyer emails, addresses, payment details, listing descriptions, or browsing history.

No content scripts

The extension does not inject code into Etsy pages or any other website. It cannot read what you browse, and it has no access to your Etsy dashboard or session.

No buyer data

No orders, no buyer emails, no addresses, no payment information. The only data it reads is listing inventory: which variations exist and whether their quantity is zero.

Encrypted tokens

Your Etsy OAuth tokens are encrypted with AES-GCM before storage. Encryption secrets stay in Cloudflare secret storage, separate from the database.

How it works

Connect, scan, get alerted.

Three steps. No inventory setup, no thresholds, no rules to configure.

Connect your Etsy shopAuthorize with Etsy's OAuth. The extension requests one scope — listings_r — and connects to your shop. Nothing else is required.
Scan your listingsThe first scan reads your active listings and saves a baseline of each variation's stock state. Existing sold-out variations appear in the popup immediately — no email is sent for the baseline.
Get one email per transitionPro checks every two hours. When an enabled variation that had stock drops to zero, you get exactly one email. Restocking above zero rearms the alert automatically. Repeated checks at zero do not send another email.
Honest comparison

When to use something else.

This is a single-purpose stock-out alert, not an inventory system. If you need the things on the right, a different tool is built for it.

Use Variation Watch

You want to know the moment a specific size, color, or option sells out — without checking listings one by one.

Use an inventory management suite

You need production tracking, material costs, reorder points, purchase orders, and multi-channel sync. A full inventory system does this. This extension does not manage inventory.

Use Variation Watch

You want a zero-configuration alert: connect, scan, done. No thresholds to set, no SKU rules, no spreadsheets to maintain.

Use a spreadsheet or automation workflow

You want custom low-stock thresholds, alerts at quantities other than zero, or integration with your own systems. A DIY automation gives you that flexibility.

Use Variation Watch

You sell on Etsy with per-variation inventory and want a passive monitor that runs while you're away.

Use a multi-channel sync tool

You sell on Etsy, Shopify, Amazon, and other channels and need inventory synchronized across all of them.

Free to scan. Pro to monitor.

Questions

Before you install

What exactly triggers an alert?
An alert fires when an enabled variation on an active listing had positive stock in the previous scan and now has zero. The first scan creates a baseline and never triggers an alert. Variations that were already at zero when first seen are shown in the popup but do not generate email.
How often does Pro check my listings?
Every two hours via a scheduled job. Checks depend on Etsy API availability and rate limits. If a check is delayed, the extension shows a "Delayed" status and does not update the baseline until a full scan completes.
Does this extension read my Etsy pages or browsing history?
No. It has no content scripts and cannot access any web page you visit. It connects only to its own service at variation-watch.quietsmith.com and to Etsy's API through that service.
What data does it store?
Shop ID and name, listing and offering IDs, variation labels and stock state, scan timestamps, your Pro notification email, and billing identifiers. OAuth tokens are encrypted with AES-GCM. It does not store orders, buyers, buyer emails, addresses, card data, listing descriptions, or browsing history.
Who processes my data?
Etsy provides authorization and inventory data. Cloudflare hosts the service and database. Lemon Squeezy handles billing. Resend delivers alert emails. Data is not sold or used for advertising.
Can I delete my account and data?
Yes. Choose "Delete account" in the extension to stop monitoring, cancel Pro, and remove your active data. Managed backups expire within 30 days. Lemon Squeezy may retain billing records as legally required. See the Privacy Policy for details.
Does this modify my Etsy listings?
No. The only Etsy scope requested is listings_r — read access to active listing inventory. The extension cannot edit, hide, renew, or delete listings.
When will it be available?
Variation Watch is coming to the Chrome Web Store. There is no release date yet. This page will be updated when the extension is published.
